and his wife ANN. Fred and Ann had a dream, and that dream became a reality through lots of hard work and dedication. They were both born and bred in Manchester England, so supporting MAN UNITED was part of their life, and even after living 40 odd years in Australia their hearts still belonged back there. They knew there was a large number of other MAN UNITED supporters in Australia, and there was even a Supporters Club in South Australia, and Western Australia. But there wasn't one in NSW. So in early February of 1993 Fred and Ann contacted a few other supporters, including me, Steve Griffiths, and with our help started the THE MANCHESTER UNITED SUPPORTERS CLUB OF NSW. | |
| As one of those original members I can tell you first hand of the drive and passion that Fred and Ann had. These two people treated the Club like it was their life, and in a lot of ways it was. Working a day job was something they had to do to keep themselves fed, but when work finished they got down to the real business of their life which was making their Supporters Club the biggest and best in Australia. I believe they have succeeded in that. At present the Club has over 300 members and some of those supporters are from different countries all around the world. They also lobbied very hard to get the Club affiliated with Manchester United Football Club, Old Trafford, and succeeded, which has enabled the Club to greatly benefit from the close tie we now currently have with Old Trafford. One of the great benefits our Club receives from Old Trafford is an allocation of Home Match Tickets. This means that if one of our members is paying the UK a visit they have the opportunity to purchase one of these tickets which means they are able to watch the Lads play live. We have had over 100 members go to watch a live game over the past 8 years, and that's got to be the greatest thrill for any United supporter. The Club has regular meetings which are held on the second Monday of each month at the Sutherland United Services Club, 7 Railway Parade, Sutherland, NSW 2232. It kicks of at 7.00pm and normally goes till 9.30pm. We normally have between 40 to 180 members turn up for these meetings which start of with all the latest news straight from the horses mouth (Fred the Red) at 'Old Trafford'. We then have a a bit of a discussion about how our great team is going and then watch a video or sometimes we have a fun games/trivia night. Bring a some food with you, bag of chips, cake, or some type of nibbles, (this keeps the cost down), and of course the bar will be open. Kids are allowed to attend these meetings, and it makes for a great family get together, which is what the whole idea of the Club is about anyway. So for you members that haven't made it to a meeting, do try and make it one time, because its always great to see new faces and match a name with a face. As a last bit of information about the Club, I have to finish of letting everyone know that Fred and Ann answered the call of their hearts and have gone back HOME. They still intend to keep a steely eye on the Club from Manchester and as the founders will still have a lot of influence in how the Club is run. The Club hasn't really lost its main two stars but really we have gained some extra strength were we really need it, which is at 'Old Trafford'. In fact they have been ensuring our Club gets some great prizes for its raffles by taking different items down to Old Trafford and getting players to sign them. This of course ensures our Club stays viable because we are able hold some fantastic Raffles, with some great signed Manchester United Memorabilia. Well that's about the lot for information about our great Club. If you have any comments, questions or wish for any more information please E-mail me at
